"Want to go to Christopher's Chasm?" Ryan asked with a sparkle in his eye. It had been a while since we had been out into the woods and Ryan had been staring at it longingly. "Common, there is supposed to be a troll king. Let's go discover what treasures he holds!" Ryan said. And with that, we set out with sunscreen and bug spray in hand searching for a geocache just outside of Rothesay, NB. Ryan and I are recreational geocachers. Geocaching is a real live treasure hunt where people scope out a special spot and hide a large, medium, or small container with a list of signatures and some treasures. The treasures can range from small toys to cache bugs. The cache bugs are items that have a certain key written on it. When you take one, you log into the website and register that you have it, and where you leave it next. If you follow the bug then you can track it around the world (sometimes). It's a pretty neat game, and it can lead you to some pretty neat spots. We had done several different caches around Saint John and they led us to some beautiful sites. I was pretty excited to see what this spot had to offer.
We drove towards the Saint John airport and got off the highway early. Ryan drove down a pretty rocky ATV trail with his amazing Subaru, and soon we got to the trail head. The way to the cache started off on a nice trail through the woods. It was starting to get a little buggy, so we sprayed a big of our bug spray and continued on. Soon our GPS coordinates took us off the trail and through a lot of backwoods bushwhacking. We had to climb on top of ferns and through bushes. Soon we had climbed to the top of the hill and we were looking out over a beautiful view
It wasn't too long before we got to the chasm. When walking up to this point you need to be careful because if you are approaching it from the wrong direction, and not paying careful attention, then you could fall into it. As soon as we approached the chasm there was a nice cool breeze coming out from the cave. It was a little bit spooky and you could easily imagine a troll king strolling his way out of the cave. Luckily we didn't find a troll king, or any trolls for that matter, but rather we found the geocache.
It was a great day spent walking through the woods. It certainly left its mark; a lot of mosquito bites! This was another great hidden hike that is around the Saint John area; it is worth a look!
